I've been married for 4 years now, and we don't usually make a huge deal out of Valentine's Day, but we'll go out on a dinner date just to have a break from the kids. I've never had any "problems" with this holiday because I never viewed it as something ONLY couples could enjoy. When my sisters and I were young, our mom would make little goodie bags for us, made up of cookies, Hershey's kisses, and maybe a pencil from the dollar store that had hearts on it (or something like that). We would make our parents a card, and sometimes get them a small gift. When handing out Valentine's cards to kids at school, I always made sure to write an extra special note to my friends, to show them what they meant to me.
As I got older, I would hear friends, or even strangers complaining, and dreading the upcoming Valentine's Day.
"It's so stupid!"
"It's not even a real holiday"
"Makes me want to puke seeing all these couples!"
Wow, really? You don't have anyone in your life you love? Nobody in your life loves you? There has to be at least ONE person! I'm not a fan of pity-parties. I hope everyone finds love. I truly believe there is someone for everyone out there. I'm a fan of love. I love love.
Platonic love.
Unconditional love.
Family/Parental love.
Passionate love.
Lusty-love.
Whatever kind of love- I dig it.
What I don't jive with- "My life is so sad, I'll never find love. Screw love! Screw all those couples out there loving each other! Blah Blah Blah!"
You're right. With that attitude you'll never find love.
One thing I've learned- if you don't love yourself, how is anyone else supposed to love you? It's not easy- learning to love yourself. If you don't even like the person you are, how do you expect anyone else to love your true self? If love is hard to find, first look within. That's the best place to start.
Secondly, can we stop being so serious about Valentine's Day? Here's 6 ways to enjoy this day.
1. have a girls night, or boys night out. Get your single pals together and enjoy celebrating your friendships. Show them how much they mean to you.
2. Go to a movie with a family member, friend, or your sweetie.
3. Invite the neighbours over for coffee/tea, and bake some cookies
4. Do something fun with the kids. A kid-parent "date"(good old quality time!)
5. Treat yourself! Head out to the spa. Order in your favourite food and binge watch all your favourite movies! (Treat yo'self!) (You could totally do this if you're coupled too.)
6. Buy coffee for a random stranger. Give a stranger a compliment. Making others feel good, makes you feel good too! Spread the love!
"Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Get out of bed,
and find something to do."
Like get a tarot reading! "flowers and chocolates are nice, but tarot readings have more spice!"
